This course will serve as the entry point for the Genre and Fandom Studies program. In it, students will learn the basic concepts and terms relevant to a sophisticated understanding of genre’s nature and purpose. In addition, they will study the historical origins and evolution of various genres. As part of this exploration, students will consider the cultural backgrounds that shape values, aesthetics, and narrative, conceptual, or rhythmic structures as they appear in specific texts. By looking at both specific examples and larger patterns, students will have the opportunity to recognize the significance and complexity of genre in artistic and cultural texts.
